Our new musical for young people, Treasure Island, opens this week and we decided to check in with the director of the production, Joanna Halliday.

This is Joanna's directorial debut, and we're incredibly proud that it's happening here at Melbourne Shakespeare Company where she made her acting debut in 2018.

Here's what Jo has got to say about Treasure Island:

The rehearsal process of Treasure Island has been a place where far away lands and adventure have come to life. The land of make believe and play are never far away from us, even as adults.

Taking Robert Louis Stevenson’s epic story published in 1883 into a bright colourful contemporary world of pantomime has been a fulfilling and belly laughing experience. First written due to Stevenson not finding a book he wanted to read on his travels, we’ve given it our own twists and turns that will have everyone on the edge of their boats!

Jacob Kuek as Squire, Claude, & Billy Bones

Our cast has worked tirelessly to create a space where children and their families can get up yell, cheer and dance like no one is watching. Each actor was allowed to play around with accents, physical comedy and choreography to offer unexpected portrayals of famous pirates, cast aways, mothers and young kids.

Captain Flint has now been transformed into a sea creature that may pinch and Ben Gunn may not sound so far away from our Australian Shores.

From memorising and learning Maxwell Simon’s music to the collaborative flow between performer and writer, Jennifer Sarah Dean, we have been able to craft and create a musical thoroughly enjoyed by the whole family.

Lucy May Knight as Doctor Livesey
As a first time director the process has been exciting, new and inspiring. I have performed in 6 Melbourne Shakespeare Productions over the years and I now see myself on the other side.

I have been able to pull from my years as a dancer, musician and actor to make this show as clean, precise, wild and silly as it can be. Collaborating with Josh McNeill on design and Stage Manager Frankie Lupton, has opened my eyes to how much work goes unseen. I’ve learned from some of the best while working with this company and I am extremely proud and excited to join their incredible list of directors.

Belle White as Jim Hawkins

At every turn I have appreciated the support of my cast, crew and creatives. I realise how much passion and love it takes to create a family musical and Melbourne Shakespeare Company has it all. We know who our audience is and create with them in mind, whether they are a regular who know where to find an easter egg or two, or a first timer you are bound to be rolling off your schooners with laughter.

Melbourne Shakespeare Company’s family shows have always been a place for community to come together and play! So don’t be a scallywag, belay no more and come join us as we travel through Central Park to find the Treasure of your dreams!

What shall you do with it I wonder?
